Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has condemned a repeated case of desecration against the holy Quran in Sweden while saying that the individual behind the move should be given the strongest punishment.

“The insult against the holy Quran in Sweden is a bitter, conspiratorial and dangerous incident,” said Ayatollah Khamenei in the message issued on Saturday.

Ayatollah Khamenei said that all scholars of the Muslim world agree that the move to insult the holy Quran should face the harshest punishment possible.

He said that the Swedish government has declared war against the Muslim world by backing the criminal, adding that the support has caused hatred and animosity in the entire Muslim countries and their governments against Stockholm.

The Swedish government is supposed to hand over the agent behind the crime to the judicial system of the Muslim countries,” said the Supreme Leader in his message.

Ayatollah Khamenei said the conspirators behind the move should know that respect and grandiosity of the holy Quran will increase day by day and such conspiracies and people behind them will not be able to prevent the holy book from shining.

According to an IRNA reporter on Friday, the gathering has turned into a sit-in.

Earlier, Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian, in a letter to the Secretary General of the United Nations, Antonio Guterres and in response to the insult to the Holy Qur’an said that the Islamic Republic of Iran strongly condemned the issuance of a permit by the Swedish authorities for the offensive and provocative act of desecrating the Holy Qur’an for the second time in the last month.

He added that Iran also strongly warns that the continuation of this act under the guise of freedom of speech is an open insult to all Muslims, provoking different communities and with the aim of anti-Islamism and promoting extremism.

Meanwhile, the Swedish ambassador in Tehran was summoned by Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Nasser Kanaani, and the Islamic Republic’s strong protest was conveyed to him over the sacrilege of the Holy Quran in the European country.

“We will not accept the new Swedish ambassador and the Iranian ambassador will also not be sent to Stockholm too,” Amirabdollahian said on Friday night.

He pointed out that the Swedish ambassador in Tehran has finished his mission, and according to the president’s order, “we will not accept the new Swedish ambassador, who is supposed to arrive in Tehran over next few days until the Swedish government takes a serious action” against the person who insults the Holy Quran.

“This is the decision that Mr. President asked me to be done and to announce this decision to the Swedish government that we have taken this action,” the Iranian foreign minister added.

The remarks by Amirabdollahian come only few hours after his phone call with his Swedish counterpart on Friday evening, during which the top Iranian diplomat called for taking legal action against the person who insults the holy Muslims book and bringing him to justice.

“The person who committed this unforgivable insult must be detained, tried and held to account for his actions. Otherwise, Sweden has to wait for the decisive decisions of the Islamic countries,” he told Tobias Billström.
